Manchester United History

Manchester United is now noted as one of the strongest teams, not only in the Premier League but also in the world. They are a solid squad of quality players led by Sir Alex Ferguson who have been manager of the team since 1986. It is very interesting to see how the journey started for this team, especially with a lot of renowned moments along its history ready to be remembered. In this part, we are going to take a look at the early years of Manchester United and see how it all begins.

Manchester United was first formed as Newton Heath L&YR FC in 1878. It is one of the oldest football teams in the world. It was also one of the first teams to join The Football League, disconnecting themselves from L&YR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) who have been sponsoring the team and officially changed the name of the team to Newton Heath FC.

The team faced a near-bankruptcy situation in 1902 with a total debt of over £2,500. They successfully found investors each providing £500, getting direct control over the team in return; the first step they took was to replace the team’s name, officially naming the team Manchester United. The 1903-04 season was one of the better for this team, although they are still in Second Division. They successfully progressed to First Division in 1906 though, before winning the Charity Shield – first ever Charity Shield nonetheless – just a year after. That is how it all started for Manchester United.
